One 'stranger' that comes to mind is the friend list in our FB. Over time most of us gained some numbers. What I've observed was that some add because they are really acquainted, some to know new people and there are those that are what you call friend collectors (quantity matters for them). :)
Internet has created new dimensions to the word friend and also in certain situations make superficial of the word.
Some parting thoughts.
Friends are friends, friends are fans but not all friends are fans. All fans are fans but not necessary friends.
